Cassinga Steel Project

The construction work on the raw iron processing plant for the Cassinga steel project, located in the municipality of Jamba, is due to start soon as part of an investment by the Turkish company Tosyali Angola, which should last 20 months.

Location of the work: Cateruca, Jamba municipality, Huíla province

Description of what it is and what it aims to achieve: When completed, it will have the capacity to process 1.7 million tonnes of iron per year.The iron will then be transported via the Moçâmedes Railway (CFM) to the Sacomar mining terminal in Namibe province, from where it will be shipped abroad.

Construction will start this year and in the first phase 4,000 jobs will be created, a figure that will double with the exploration stage.

This project has experienced several setbacks, as experimental exploration work began in 2013 through the AEMR company, but no progress was made due to financial difficulties.

Through this project, other infrastructures could be boosted and promote the development of this region, ranging from the electricity sector to transport, such as the Moçâmedes railway and the commercial port of Namibe.
