Lobito Refinery
The Angolan government, through the state oil company Sonangol, wants to raise the quality standards of oil refining. For this reason, it launched this project to build an oil refinery and infrastructure in the city of Lobito, in Benguela province, capable of refining up to 200,000 bopd (barrels of crude oil per day) to contribute to the Angolan state’s efforts to gradually eliminate the current dependence on imports of refined products, mainly petrol and diesel.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
Name of work: Lobito Refinery
Location of work: Reserved land, located approximately 35 kilometres north-west of the city of Benguela and 8 kilometres from the city of Lobito.
Description of what it is and what it aims to achieve: To boost the creation of a new industrial centre in the region, with the development of a petrochemical and processing industry.
To help increase the country’s refining capacity by building a refinery with the capacity to process between 100,000 and 200,000 bopd, through the contribution of private investment.
Cost of the project: 6 billion dollars
Contractor: China National Chemical Engineering (CNCEC) – commitment to finalise the project by 2026.
