Caculo Cabaça Dam
Started in 2017, the construction of the country’s largest dam (103 metres high) and the third largest on the African continent is currently progressing at a fast pace, with almost 13 % of the work having already been completed. It is located in the municipality of Cambambe in the province of Kwanza Norte and is intended to supply electricity to the Angolan population, as well as benefiting neighbouring countries such as Namibia and South Africa.

Description of what it is and what it is intended to achieve: The Caculo Cabaça dam will be Angola’s largest hydroelectric development. The main objective is to produce energy, covering the electrification needs of at least 50 % of the population by 2025. Once completed, the hydroelectric project will also benefit neighbouring countries. The dam will have 5 turbines, 4 of which will be in the main power station with a capacity of 530 Megawatts each. The other will be in the ecological plant and will have a capacity of 52 Megawatts. The completion of the dam will significantly reduce the country’s electricity consumption deficit by 66%.
Cost of the project: 4.5 billion dollars (in addition to the dam, it includes transmission lines totalling over 1,300 km).
