ACCESS ROADS TO LUANDA’S NEW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The access roads to Luanda’s new international airport ‘Dr Agostinho Neto’, which have generated so much controversy, and which have even suffered fierce criticism from the President of the Republic himself, are finally beginning to take shape.
The construction and rehabilitation work on the 45-kilometre road leading to the New Luanda International Airport in the Bom Jesus commune, in the municipality of Icolo Bengo, is progressing well and should be delivered by the end of September, according to projections made by the Angolan Roads Institute (INEA) in Luanda.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
Name of the Work: Access Roads to Luanda International Airport
Location of Work: Luanda
Description of what it is and what it aims to achieve: According to the Luanda Provincial Government (GPL), the work is being carried out in an integrated manner between the central government, INEA and GPL.
The works are divided into maintenance and conservation, requalification, rehabilitation and construction.
The maintenance and upkeep work on the Patriota road, which has been closed since January, and the Futungo/Cabolombo road have already been completed, while in the area of upkeep and maintenance work is being carried out on Avenida Pedro de Castro Van-Dúnem “Loy” and 21 de Janeiro.
Of particular note is Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues, where the works are already 80 per cent complete, with only the pedestrian walkway from the Operational Unit to the so-called Ponte do 25, on the EN 230, still to be done.
In the case of Avenida Fidel Castro, the most important access route, there is also work going on at the moment, with high visibility, from the Cabolombo area to the Ponte do 25. However, there are still some concerns about the rehabilitation of this road, especially in terms of macro-drainage.
For those arriving from Angola’s southern coast and wanting quick access to the New Airport, there is exactly the Fidel Castro road, and a project to widen the Cabolombo/Barra do Cuanza road was launched in 2023, which will ensure fluidity on that section of the EN 100.
The Simão Kimbango road in Kilamba Kiaxi will also be rehabilitated to improve access to the new airport. These works are justified in view of the marked deterioration of the road, with deep problems of micro and macro drainage, lack of public lighting, which has been an obstacle to vehicle circulation, causing major traffic jams.
Cost of the Work: not disclosed
Contractor: several, including OMATAPALO
